Inside the Spinal Injury Project: A Visit Filled with Hope

Inside the Spinal Injury Project: A Visit Filled with Hope

There are some causes you support from a distance, and others that become deeply personal.

For Fleur Collective, our connection with Perry Cross and the Perry Cross Spinal Research Foundation has always been one of the latter.

Recently, members of our team had the privilege of visiting Griffith University for a behind-the-scenes look at the Spinal Injury Project and the world-first human clinical trial that has been decades in the making.

And making the evening even more special, Perry was there too.

A moment decades in the making

The visit offered a rare glimpse inside the laboratories where Professor James St John and his team have spent years working towards one extraordinary goal: finding a cure for paralysis.

It is one thing to read about groundbreaking research. It is another to stand in the room where it is happening, meet the researchers behind it and hear Perry speak about a mission that has shaped more than three decades of his life.

“Supporting Perry and the Foundation has always meant so much to me personally. To see how far this research has come and to stand inside the place where this extraordinary work is happening was incredibly moving. It reminded me why we continue to believe in this cause and the possibility of a future without paralysis.” - Fleur Richardson

The clinical trial will test a therapy using a patient's own olfactory ensheathing cells, specialised cells taken from the nose with unique nerve-repairing properties, together with intensive rehabilitation.

For people living with spinal cord injury, this research represents something enormously powerful: hope.

The people behind the science

What stayed with us most was not only the science, but the people behind it.

Every researcher, every sample and every hour spent in the lab ultimately connects back to real people living with spinal cord injury and hoping for more movement, more independence and more possibility.

“Seeing the research up close was quite extraordinary. You realise how many brilliant, dedicated people have spent years working towards this one goal. It was incredibly humbling and left me feeling so hopeful about what may be possible.” Tracey Tarr

We are incredibly proud to be part of the PCSRF family and to continue standing alongside Perry as this next chapter unfolds.

Breakthroughs like this do not happen because of one person alone. They happen because researchers, advocates, donors, businesses and communities keep showing up and refuse to give up.
